Arizona State at Stanford
When: 11:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 17, 2018
Where: Maples Pavilion, Stanford, California

Two teams trending in opposite directions meet Wednesday as 14th-ranked Arizona State visits a surging Stanford team that has won four in a row, including a road sweep of the Washington schools last week. The Cardinal look to take another step forward against Arizona State, which opened with 12 straight wins but narrowly avoided falling to 1-4 start in the Pac-12 with Saturday’s 77-75 win over Oregon State.

Opponents have started using a zone defense to slow down the up-tempo Sun Devils, who are shooting 41.3 percent from the field and averaging 77.6 points in league play compared to 50.8 percent and 91.8 points during their 12-0 start. “We may not be playing exactly like we were earlier in the season,” coach Bobby Hurley told reporters. “And I know that you go through different parts of the year where that's going to be the case. We’ve just got to push through the tough times. I know that we're going to respond.” Hurley’s squad faces a major test against Stanford, which completed its first two-game road sweep in conference play in nearly eight years with last Saturday’s 73-64 win over Washington. The Cardinal boast a solid mix of youth and veteran leadership, led by preseason All-American forward Reid Travis, who averages 20.1 points and 7.3 rebounds.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (14-3, 2-3 Pac-12): Point guard Tra Holder entered last Saturday’s contest as the league’s highest scorer at 20.6 points per game but suffered a shoulder injury against the Beavers and was held to a season-low four points in 30 minutes. With Holder limited, senior guard Shannon Evans stepped up and scored all 22 of his points in the second half on 7-of-11 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Hurley is hoping to jumpstart freshman forward Romello White, who averaged 14.9 points and 8.6 rebounds during non-conference play but has seen those numbers drop dramatically in recent games.

ABOUT STANFORD (10-8, 4-1): Coach Jerod Haase has four freshmen in his eight-man rotation, including guard Daejon Davis, who was named Pac-12 player of the week after averaging 15.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists during the Washington road swing. Haase has received a welcome boost from senior wing Dorian Pickens, who missed 11 games with a left foot injury but has averaged 15.2 points in league play and scored 28 in last Thursday’s 79-70 win over Washington State. The team’s impressive frontcourt is led by the duo of Travis and senior Michael Humphrey, who averages 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds.

1. Stanford holds a 48-37 lead in the all-time series, but Arizona State won all three meetings last season.

2. Stanford is shooting 68.5 percent from the foul line, tied with Washington for last in the Pac-12.

3. Arizona State is 6-1 when trailing at halftime.
